BALAKIREV, Milii Alexeevich: A selection of early editions. This important Russian composer died 100 years ago on 29 May 1910.
Milii Alexeevich Balakirev (1837 -1910) was the doyen and mentor of the composers of the "New Russian Musical School" - Borodin, Cui, Musorgsky and Rimsky-Korsakov - also known as the "Mighty Handful" (moguchaia kuchka), the title inadvertently given them in 1867 by the critic Vladimir Stasov. The drawing of the composer was made in 1907 by the artist Lev Samoilovich Bakst (1866-1924), and here is in the form of postcard No 3065, as issued by the Community of St. Eugene in 1908.
